OptiGraphics got our start in 1970, which makes us veterans in the fast-changing world of printing technology. But we’re babes in the words compared to the grand old institution of trading/collector’s cards, which got their start in the 1860s!
Not many so-called novelties can trace their history to the Lincoln administration, but trading cards show no signs of slipping, as they continue to evolve in exciting ways.
OptiGraphics’ many 3D/lenticular and sensory-based printing technologies are helping our clients keep this 150-year-old concept fresh.
Traditionally small and usually made out of paperboard or thick paper, trading cards usually include an image of a person, place or thing (fictional or real) and a short description of the picture, along with other text like statics or trivia. Originally associated with sports, specifically baseball, subjects have expanded to include cartoons, comic book characters, television series and film stills. Sports and fantasy-based cards designed for playing games have progressed over the past two decades.
Trading Cards and 3D/lenticular printing are an obvious pairing, adding another element of interest for this field’s avid group of collectors. Lenticular printing has witnessed a surge in popularity in the advertising and marketing sphere and its 3D effects are an ideal method for adding new dimensions to a perennially popular item like trading cards.
Collectors of trading cards love hidden messages/images and OptiGraphics’ experienced staff loves helping clients develop trading card concepts that incorporate our industry-standard printing technologies. DarkReveal, which uses “glow in the dark ink” to reveal images when the lights go out, is a perfect match for these items, as is Red Reveal, which uses special film that exposes a hidden message, when the card is held in front of something red (or blue in some cases).
Another great option for adding a “whiff” of excitement to our trading cards is ScentReveal®, a scratch-and-sniff printing technology, which lets you print items featuring more than a thousand distinct smells—from flowers to food to ash trays. Wecan make your trading cards smell like apples, lemons or peaches, dozens of designer fragrances and we even offer such unusual scents as ashtray, burnt rubber, manure, natural gas and wet dirt—a great fit for cards featuring the stars of baseball, soccer, or other Spring and Summer sports.
